A new freeform mode lets you break index cards out of a rigid grid, rearrange them on the fly, then apply those changes to your project’s structure. And a handy pull-down menu makes it easier than ever to customize the different headers (from preset categories such as “word count” or “progress” to user-created metadata) in outline view.The new Collections let you gather subsets of documents (say, every chapter in which a certain character appears, or all your research on the city of Petra) in tabbed folders at the top of the left-hand Binder column.

Placing files or folders in a collection won’t alter the project itself, and searches saved as collections will automatically update as you add new relevant documents. I found the Collections interface confusing at first; it’s hard to tell which collection you’re clicking on, or how to get to the others from whichever one you’ve called up.

But like nearly all of Scrivener’s features, it’s completely optional and easily hidden.Scrivener 2 also simplifies editing and revising. With up to five layers of color-coded revisions, you can clearly show who added what, when, to which document. (Note that this isn’t like tracking changes in ( ); you can remove the color from revised text, but you can’t selectively peel back alterations you make.) Scrivener 2 makes automatic backups to a separate ZIP file every time you close a project. Previously a crowded, intimidating monolith, it’s now a streamlined checklist of all the options necessary to turn your files into a finished manuscript.

I was delighted to discover that I could now focus on compiling the contents of individual folders, sparing me from manually deselecting every file in my first through fourth drafts just to get a PDF of the fifth. In addition to PDF, RTF, and Microsoft Word exporting, Scrivener 2 can save projects as iPad-friendly ePub documents or a Kindle e-books. In my thesis, I used a color to designate status and to represent figures, tables and unused references. Thus, at a glance, I can see how many figures or tables are in a given section or chapter.

Totally agree that Scrivener is much, much better than Word for writing and the color coding is a good idea. For planning the document, however, I would recommend using Circus Ponies Notebook or any other pure outliner. You can collect and structure the content on a more fine-grained level and use it to write down the text when you have finished structuring the text and have all information available. Using a content outline for planning and Scrivener (with the subdocuments for the structure) works well for me. See, e.g.,Liked.

I am an undergrad and just discovered Scrivener during the winter break. I am looking forward to using it to write my papers. It is my understanding that the “right” way to use Scrivener is to use it to work on the content and then import it into Word or some-such program to polish the formatting and appearance.In the past I have used Word to write my papers + the addon software StyleEase to handle my citations (I own all three editions: MLA, APA, and CMS) and I plan to continue that but I will use Scrivener’s annotation feature to contain “fast & dirty” citation information including any quotes.

When imported into Word those annotations vanish from the main text and appear as sidebar balloon text boxes with little red lines pointing to the exact place where the citation needs to be inserted using StyleEase. If there is extensive citation information I can always have copies of those sources in the references folder and work off of those in a parallel window with Word.Doing it this way I can focus on the.content. of my sources and I will not even need to.think. about the citation.formats. until I am ready to insert them as the very final step of writing my paper. StyleEase will automatically build the bibliography/works cited/references pages and the per-page footnotes as the citations are inserted.Like.
