My apologies for the length. Just trying to give enough info about the problem.Recently I tried to move my photos from my sd card to the computer hard drive.
When I put the card into the reader the chkdsk window showed up and, instead of going on without the scan I selected to do the check.The result was that many photos were moved to a hidden folder. The photo files are now in chk format instead of jpg.In addition, the folder that contained the photos has been converted to a 32KB size FILE of unknown type.I have tried freeware recovery or restoration softare but the attempts were totally unsuccessful.Can anyone help with this? I can't afford losing those photos.P.S.: My operating system is Windows Vista home premiumPS2: sorry for categorizing it in general hardware. I saw the mistake after havind done it. Are the pics viewable in the camera? May need to use it to transfer images.It sounds like the sd card is going bad. Recovery software really screws those flash devices up.
Once they are gone, that's that. There is no partial information to build on / recover. A bad spot is forever bad. Formatting will not repair this device to a dependable state. It will tell you it did (don't believe it!)Those images with the chk extender, change the chk to jpg.

Before I could see everything in the camera.I already tried to change the chk to jpg by renaming and by using the command mode. The files became jpg but the source data could not be recognized.After the chkdsk the file that previously contained the photos was canverted to the 32KB file I mentioned in the first post. Is there any way to re-convert it to a folder?I insist on that question 'cause I sense that this conversion is responsible for the 'blank' jpg files i get.
I tried Recuva as OtheHill suggested but had no result. It showed photos which I have moved to an external hard disc and thus already have. It didn't help me with the photos I have lost.What is interesting is that, of the total size of the sd card (15GB), the free space is only 13,4GB. The remaining 1,6GB contains the chk files that were previously photos. It seems that all the photos' data is stored in the sd card in an unaccessable format and of course the problem of the file thar once was a folder still remains.All hope is gone??? This is a very long shot (which means it's unlikely to work) but.I use a viewer called IrfanView. Once or twice in the past I have asked it to Open a dud file and it has either managed to read it somehow (which I then resaved) or has offered to open it as some other picture file.
So, if you ran your either your chk files or jpg converted chk files on it you might just be lucky, although I rather doubt it.Most likely the chk files are just parts of files.EDIT:Found this (CHK-Mate). Not for the faint of heart. You can toast the medium (disk or stick) in a keypress. You will need to know your image size in bytes, sector allocation of the memstick (how many bytes / sector), and the tag used by the image format they were saved in. Your puzzle could possibly contain however many found files you have. So now the question, How important are those images? Takes a lot of time to reconstruct from raw data.
You'll have to recognize it as data (numbers), not an image. The result will be the image if all the parts exist. However the chances are 50-50, because each chk file's size is an actual photo size (that is, when it still was in jpg format). I don't know yet if thecontent of the chk file is a whole file or just a part or something fragmented anyway.@modify.hardware: yesterday I googled the folder issue and found instructions that were posted 1,5 year ago. The tutorial describes also the use of a program that must be a disk editor, as you recommended.I read the risks and have not tried it yet.

I have reached further than I thought I could, but still don't know much. In fact, I am not even quite sure where to find the sector allocation and the tag used you refer to. When you read the file for an image (raw) the first set of bytes is the file type:Read a good image to see how the raw file appears. Now you have an idea of what you are looking for. Look at the beginning and the end of the file.Once you identify that header in a chk file, you have found the beginning of an image.
More than likely, the end of the image will contain zero's or 255's as filler for the sector, but anything is possible. Hopefully, the characters are the same for easy recognition. If you can't find the header blocks, 1 for each image, it's not worth continuing unless you REALLY like a puzzle challenge. You can insert them (image file headers) and write the file back to disk, then open with a viewer. You will end up with partial images that are 'broken'. Maybe you can paste them together.

If the sd card has never been used before, it makes it a bit easier. If it has been used and erased, you may have a lot of 'noise' to sort through.You seem to have the patience and knowledge to do this. Lots of trial and error for anyone attempting this. You may want to get more information on the technical part of the image format for the camera. Nothing wrong with copy and paste into those raw sectors to get headers in there if missing.I hope you are very lucky!

Mourning HallIf you try editing the files make sure you work on 'copies' of them in case they get worse.Sorry, when I mentioned IrfanView I meant that you change the file extension from.chk to.jpg otherwise, as you say, it won't even see them. It's OK to do this in Windows. Chances are it still won't read them but it only takes a sec to try if Irfan is still onboard. The only reason I'm mentioning this is because I have had faulty pictures that only Irfan can handle.If you should somehow manage to edit a copy file, then Irfan might still bethe only thing that touches them if they are imperfect. In which case you get Irfan to resave the file and that will clear up the loose ends.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks.
